Spring fruit and vegetables

Look for rhubarb, spring greens and radishes. British asparagus arrives in spring and has a short season, so ask growers when theirs is ready. Roast a bunch alongside the vegetables you already planned to cook.

Summer fruit and vegetables

Look for strawberries, raspberries, peas, courgettes and runner beans. Start with a punnet of berries or add fresh peas and courgettes to a familiar pasta dish.

Autumn fruit and vegetables

Look for apples, pears, blackberries, squash and pumpkins. Try two varieties from a local orchard when you find them, or roast squash for a traybake and use the rest in soup.

Winter fruit and vegetables

Look for leeks, kale, parsnips and Brussels sprouts. British apples may still be on sale from storage. A couple of leeks and a handful of kale can make a pot of bean soup go further.

How to shop with the seasons

Treat these examples as a starting point. Harvest weeks vary with region, weather and growing methods. Ask what was picked this week, check where it was grown, and buy what you have time to use. If you find a genuine glut, freeze or share what you can’t use fresh.
