How to sell local food online in the UK

Start with a small range you can supply reliably. Give nearby customers enough information to order, then set a collection schedule you can keep.

Write a listing customers can use

Use a product name someone can recognise, a photograph of what they’ll receive, and a clear price and quantity. Include the relevant ingredient, allergen and storage information and explain how and when the order will reach the customer.

For example, a baker might advertise ‘Country sourdough, one 800 g loaf, £5. Order by Thursday at 6 pm for Saturday collection, 9 to 11 am.’ Add the actual collection address and the food information required for your product. Check official guidance for your location and type of business before taking orders.

Set a preorder and collection routine

Plan backwards from the collection window. Work out how much you can make and pack, then set your order deadline and available quantity. Publish the same schedule on the listing and the order confirmation.

  • Set your stock or preorder limit before orders open.
  • Give buyers the collection address and time window before they pay.
  • Take sold-out products off sale and tell customers promptly if an order changes.
  • Check what people asked about this week and make the answer easier to find next time.
